New York High School Girls Preseason Rankings: October 2019

NY image for post.jpg

We update rankings every month during the season. For female wrestlers in NY, the season will run all the way from November to July as girls transition from folkstyle to freestyle in April. Here’s a few things we want you to know:

1. Yes, it’s folkstyle season, but these rankings are mixed folkstyle & freestyle. We don’t have enough head to heads to ignore the freestyle results as they help give us more accurate info for making this list. If girls split matches with each other in both styles, folkstyle trumps freestyle during folkstyle season for ranking placement, and vice versa.

2. We’ve included 7th & 8th graders in this “high school” ranking as otherwise, they’ll be in a ranking no-man’s land. There are some youth co-ed rankings, but wrestlers start disappearing off those lists in 7th grade and, well, they’re co-ed. If a 7th or 8th grade female wrestler has the results to justify a high school ranking, they’ll be included. As an aside, we are considering developing a ranking for 12U girls in NY. Stay tuned on that one!

3. Girls do not have to be certified in a varsity program to be ranked. First, there are plenty of modified & JV girls who have rankable results, so we’re not going to exclude them on a technicality. Further, we don’t want to be in a situation where we have to leave somebody out because they weren’t certified, like Zoe Gress was two years ago, who certainly had the ranking credentials. Gress had just committed to freestyle that year and didn’t wrestle in her school’s varsity boys’ program. We certainly don’t want to “punish” a girl if she doesn’t want to wrestle the boys. Worthy note: WCWA national champion Jayden Laurent, from Wisconsin, didn’t wrestle on her high school boys’ team her last few years in school because the boys in her weight class were getting too strong. She played basketball and then wrestled women’s freestyle season in the USAW circuit after basketball season.

4. We included honorable mentions in a 90U (90 pounds & under) class. There’s always going to be girls that are excellent wrestlers, but are too small to make a varsity weight class. We’re going to acknowledge the best in our state at sub-90 weights.

5. Rankings are never perfect—especially the first one! Tell us where we got it wrong. Is there incorrect info? Let us know! Feedback email: info@americanwomenswrestling.com
